I am a wife, mom to the cutest little boys ever (and yes, I am knowingly TOTALLY biased!), and an avid lover of the sunshine! I graduated from George Fox University with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Prior to starting Connected Care Patient Advocates, LLC in 2017, I worked in surgical services in the hospital setting, with the majority of my time being in the operating room.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and it really is the best place in the world! During my last two years of high school my family moved to Manila, Philippines. I graduated from an international school and then stayed an extra year volunteering in a free medical clinic. Moving at the age of 16 and losing all my independence was brutal, but the Philippines is where my love of nursing blossomed. Being able to care for the people that had no financial means to get medical care was incredibly moving. Being a nurse and walking with clients and their families is an amazing gift that God has blessed me with.

The importance of independent RN patient advocacy really hit me as my parents were taking care of their aging parents. It was the back and forth phone calls from my mom, “the doctor just said this, what does that mean?” And as my grandma was passing away, “this is what is happening, how much time does she actually have?” And from a distance, with third party information, it was really challenging to feel like I was of as much value as I could be to my family. It was a stressful and emotion-filled time for everyone. But when I was able to actually be there in person sitting beside my grandparents and parents in the appointments, ask the detailed questions, interpret the medical lingo, understand the doctors questions and what info they were trying to gather - it made a WORLD of difference to everyone involved. In fact, the next follow up appointment my grandpa went to, the doctor asked him where I was. My family was able to fully understand what the doctor had told them and what the game plan was and the doctor had confidence that they were giving information that was being understood. When the big, yucky, difficult-to-swallow diagnosis came, it brought a sense of peace and confidence to my family that they had someone by their side, that they were comfortable with and trusted, that fully understood what was going on. And that is what I aim to bring to each of my clients; peace and confidence amidst their stressful and emotional journey in healthcare.

TESTIMONIALs

[My advocate] is both compassionate and detail oriented; the perfect mix for a nurse and an advocate! She quickly absorbed my background and goals for the medical history project and produced a meticulous timeline and other materials that have proved invaluable in establishing a new medical network in my home.

I really appreciated the support and guidance I received both for myself and my family. It put us all at ease to have an advocate in our corner. This made a huge difference in my ability to advocate for myself and to navigate what I was going through.
