Doctor Holding Patient's Hand

What is the difference between a nurse advocate and a health advocate?

A registered nurse advocate is licensed in the state within which she/he works and it is within their scope of practice to advocate on your behalf. Health advocates are not regulated under a licensing body.

How are you different from a nurse navigator or a case manager?

Independent registered nurse patient advocates work directly for you so they are not beholden to the hospital or organization for which they work. Their sole duty of loyalty is to you.

Does insurance cover the cost of your services?

We do not bill insurance. This avoids a clear and obvious conflict of interest. We are retained by patients (or their families) and paid by patients (or their families). This ensures that our interests are kept squarely on our patients and their well-being.

How long will I need your services?

For as long as you need. This is entirely up to you and we take pride in our ability to tailor our services to you as you see fit.

What will my doctor think? Will they resent the presence of an advocate?

We have found that most healthcare providers love us because as we help you, we are also helping them. We make their jobs easier by explaining in lay terms exactly what is going on, asking informed questions, and helping you get the most out of your appointments, treatments, procedures and surgeries.

When should you call us?

You should contact an RN advocate when:

  • You have just received a diagnosis and do not know what to do

  • You are ill and do not know what to ask your doctor

  • You are weighing (or do not understand) various treatment options

  • You need help or guidance getting the best possible healthcare for yourself or a loved one.

Important caveat: Not all RN patient advocates provide all services.

Please contact an advocate in your state directly to learn what services they offer.

[My advocate] is both compassionate and detail oriented; the perfect mix for a nurse and an advocate! She quickly absorbed my background and goals for the medical history project and produced a meticulous timeline and other materials that have proved invaluable in establishing a new medical network in my home.

I really appreciated the support and guidance I received both for myself and my family. It put us all at ease to have an advocate in our corner. This made a huge difference in my ability to advocate for myself and to navigate what I was going through.

My nurse advocate has been invaluable to my husband and me in finding appropriate care and placement for my sister who is suffering from advanced Parkinson's Disease. She reviewed and commented on every suggested treatment option and referred us to appropriate professionals for further assistance.
