Hello,

My name is Lucy Barwick. I am a Registered Nurse, certified as an Independent RN Patient Advocate, and am a Duke trained Integrative Health Coach. I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and a Master’s Degree in Public Health Administration from the University of South Carolina, am married, and have three wonderful children ages 25, 21, and 18.

I have 10 years of direct patient care experience:  Labor and Delivery, Out-Patient Surgery, teen pregnancy prevention in a public health setting, and patient advocacy/education with the Epilepsy Association of South Carolina. While my background in the health care arena has afforded me a multitude of experiences, it was during the years of my own personal health care crisis (2006 – 2012) that drew me to look beyond the limitations of Western medicine as I struggled to heal my mind, body and spirit in unison.

My journey to healing has been long and tumultuous. It began with a botched surgery to remove a pelvic mass. This was followed by a misdiagnosis and years of being mismanaged all while struggling to navigate a complex, fragmented health care system. For years, I felt like I was drowning. I became angry, anxious and depressed with overwhelming feelings of helplessness. It is mind boggling to reflect on all I experienced, especially since my husband, a General Surgeon, and I are well educated and well connected in our medical community.  I knew that I did not want anyone to go through what I experienced. I knew that if I could experience such failures of care, others less knowledgeable and connected to medicine were even more at risk than I. I knew I wanted to "pay it forward" with all I had learned. Becoming an Independent RN Patient Advocate become my passion and calling.

I use a two-prong approach, advocacy and education, when I work with clients, their families, and health care providers. While advocating for the absolute best possible care with the goal of getting the best possible outcome, I also educate the client(s) on their medical condition, advise them on various options and how to best manage their condition through either conventional and/or alternative medicine protocols, and we work on the development of their own advocacy skills so that the client(s) masters agency. When someone is sick and overwhelmed, they often cannot adequately frame their questions or concerns; they often do not know or cannot think of the questions to ask; they may not be familiar with the language of medicine. Together or separately, any of these factors can lead to a communication breakdown and a breakdown in the quality of care. Having an independent RN Patient Advocate to assist in navigating the complexities of the medical system and in disseminating critical diagnostic information alleviates undue stress on the patient and family so that their energy and focus can be spent on healing.
