RN, BSN, IRNPA, CNOR
I have been a Registered Nurse for over 30 years and have experienced our healthcare system as not only a nurse, but also as a caregiver, patient and pharmaceutical employee. I’ve held positions in emergency medicine, intensive care, education, administration, research, solid organ transplant and sales/medical affairs in the pharmaceutical industry. I have seen it all. In addition to that, I am a retired Captain, Navy Nurse Corps, US Navy Reserve.
As an ICU nurse, I’ve seen families, with little or no medical background, confronted with difficult decisions regarding their family members care with nowhere to turn. Our health care system’s fragmentation, complexity and its all-too-frequent absence of caring and compassion can be overwhelming. As a recent caretaker for my mother, even with my background, I found errors, miscommunication, ambiguity and fear.
Even doctors can’t navigate the system:
In 2018, I completed the Independent RN Patient Advocate program through the University of Arizona. An advocate can be helpful for people who are managing chronic conditions by organizing and making sense of medical records, reviewing medications, attending medical appointments, and connecting to resources. We can be especially helpful for those facing a new diagnosis themselves or thrust into the caretaker role of aging parents.
Families & Patients
[My advocate] is both compassionate and detail oriented; the perfect mix for a nurse and an advocate! She quickly absorbed my background and goals for the medical history project and produced a meticulous timeline and other materials that have proved invaluable in establishing a new medical network in my home.
I really appreciated the support and guidance I received both for myself and my family. It put us all at ease to have an advocate in our corner. This made a huge difference in my ability to advocate for myself and to navigate what I was going through.
My nurse advocate has been invaluable to my husband and me in finding appropriate care and placement for my sister who is suffering from advanced Parkinson's Disease. She reviewed and commented on every suggested treatment option and referred us to appropriate professionals for further assistance.
